Lepidosiren paradoxa is the single member of lungfish that found in the slow moving, fresh, shallow water of Amazon. It is also known as South American lungfish. It is the only living member of its family.

Protopterus amphibious is a lungfish found in Africa’s east region. Generally known as Gilled African lungfish. It grows commonly 44 cm long making it the smallest lungfish species in the world.

Lungfish consists highly specialized respiratory system. Their lungs are connected to the larynx and pharynx without a trachea. Mostly all lungfish species have two lungs, but the Australian lungfish is exception which has only one lung. The lungs of lungfish are homologous to the lungs of higher vertebrates such as tetra pod.
